Warrawee Koine Prevails In Mares Open

Warrawee Koine picked up her first win of 2011 in the $38,000 Fillies & Mares Open Pace on Friday night at Woodbine Racetrack defeating even-money favourite A Ps Money Maker and last week’s winner Run On Luck.

With Jody Jamieson in the bike, Warrawee Koine sprinted off the wings of the gate from Post 4 and led the field to the first quarter in :28.1 before settling for a pocket trip. As she rounded the turn and moved into the backstretch, Run On Luck (Mark MacDonald) swept up to take over from the two-hole.

The new leader showed the way past the half in :56 and three-quarters in 1:24.

Jamieson sent Warrawee Koine after Run On Luck in the stretch and the Astreos-My Gal Hall mare cruised on by to score in 1:53 by a length and a quarter over a quick-closing A Ps Money Maker and her driver Rick Zeron, both 2010 O’Brien Awards finalists. Run On Luck finished third.

Warrawee Koine paid $10.40 to win as the 4-1 third choice. The Colin Johnson trainee notched her first win of the year after finishing just a half-length behind Run On Luck and A Ps Money Maker last Friday night. The victory, lucky No. 13 for the five-year-old, helped boost her career bankroll to $243,518 for owner Dr. Michael R. Wilson of Rockwood, Ont.

The win was one of four on the card for Jamieson.
