Warrawee Needy turned in a punishing performance when he stopped the clock in 1:49.4 in the $170,000 OSS Gold Series Final for two-year-old pacing colts at Woodbine Racetrack on Monday, and the clocking earned him a spot in the OSS record book for the third time.
The precocious pacing son of E Dees Cam-Great Memories now owns a piece of OSS history on three different-sized ovals. His 1:53.1 win at Flamboro Downs earlier this year is the quickest on a half-mile oval, his 1:52.1 performance at Rideau Carleton Raceway ties him with Just Asign To Me as the fastest freshmen colts to tour a five-eighths mile track in the provincial program and tonight’s 1:49.4 score at Woodbine smashed the former seven-eighths mile record of 1:51 set by Keystone Horatio in 2007.
Warrawee Needy, though a bit bumpy-gaited heading into the first turn for driver Jody Jamieson, rushed to the lead and tore through panels of :27, :55.2 and 1:23 before sprinting home in :26.4 to stop the teletimer in 1:49.4. I Found My Beach rallied to grab the runner-up spot, with the pocket-sitting Machapelo fading late to finish third.
“We are going to let the horse do the talking from now on,” said Jody Jamieson. “We were talking stuff all summer on how great we thought he was and he didn’t let us down, just bad things can happen at small tracks. It was probably a mistake to go to Grand River and Flamboro, but your hands are tied when you’re not eligible to anything else. He will decide how good he is and I think he showed a few people again that he is still going to be here for the Super Finals.”
“He went in 1:49.4 and he just did it on his own,” Jamieson added. “I pulled the plugs around the last turn and yelled at him once. He was strong through the wire.”
Trainer Carl Jamieson co-owns the colt with Tom Kyron, Floyd Marshall and the pacer’s breeder, Dr. Michael Wilson. The victory improved the rookie’s record to 8-1-0 in 11 starts, and the $85,000 payday lifted his earnings to $385,000.
