Fresh off a Canadian record performance against sophomores in the $300,000 OSS Super Final, Mister Herbie returned to Woodbine Racetrack on Monday evening and romped against older rivals in the $38,000 Preferred Trot.
Undefeated since joining forces with trainer Jeff Gillis, Mister Herbie was in no hurry in the early stages of Monday’s assignment. Jody Jamieson ducked the gelding into the four-hole while Canbec Fridolin rolled to the top and cut the quarter in :26.1. Kashs Caviar brushed to the lead in the backstretch and led the field to the half in :55.3 before coming under attack from Mister Herbie around the final turn.
Kashs Caviar was still the leader at the three-quarter pole in 1:24.4, but he was quickly overtaken by Mister Herbie. The three-year-old son of Here Comes Herbie-Independent Lassie unleashed a :28.1 closing panel to win by 2-3/4 lengths over Zeus Lightning in 1:53.1. Vacation Day, who sat seventh throughout the mile, came on to finish third.
Owned by the partnership of Jeff Gillis, Gerald Stay of Hillsburgh and Mac Nichol of Burlington, ON, Mister Herbie pushed his winning streak to four-in-a-row thanks to his triumph in the Monday feature. The eight-time winner has stashed away more than $291,000 to date.
