The winning streak is now five-in-a-row and counting for the recent Canadian record setter and OSS Super Final winner, Mister Herbie, thanks to his come-from-behind tally in Monday’s $38,000 Preferred Trot at Woodbine Racetrack.
Jody Jamieson guided Mister Herbie to his latest triumph, and the effort certainly ranks right up there with his efforts to date.
Everyone in the field was at the mercy of the tempo being set by Andover America. The Ben Baillargeon trainee, who toted back-to-back wins into the tilt, rushed to the lead from Post 7 for driver Mario Baillargeon before dictating the speed through fractions of :27.3, :58.1 and 1:27.1 before going mano-a-mano with Mister Herbie. A :26.4 final frame was kicked out by Mister Herbie, and that was good enough to earn the three-year-old gelding the win by three-quarters of a length over Andover America in 1:54. Star Ruffnready fired home in :26.2 to finish third.
Sent off at odds of 2-5, the Jeff Gillis-trained son of Here Come Herbie-Independent Lassie improved his 2011 record to 8-3-2 from 19 trips postward. He’s banked in excess of $294,000 this season and more than $310,000 to date. He is owned by the J Gillis G Stay partnership of Hillsburgh and Mac Nichol of Burlington, ON.
