Warrawee Needy changed up tactics on Monday evening in the $130,000 OSS Gold Series Final for two-year-old colts and geldings at Mohawk Racetrack, but the end result was still the same as it was in the first two starts for the precocious pacer.
The undefeated son of E Dees Cam-Great Memories slipped to the front for driver Jody Jamieson and threw down fractions of :28.1, :57.1 and 1:24.3 before shrugging off a late challenge from pocket-sitter Jake Sully en route to an easy score in 1:52.2. Jake Sully was the best of the rest, and Caddy Jeff finished a distant third in the rich event.
“He did it quite easily tonight,” said Jamieson. “When Aaron [Byron driving Jake Sully] popped off of my back and my horse just ducked his head and dug in. He’s just a very impressive
individual. It’s Rideau next week or the week after. It will give him a chance to see a different track and get a little more experience under his belt.
“I’m a firm believer that everything happens for a reason,” Jamieson added about Warrawee Needy not being eligible to the $1 million Metro Pace. “There was a reason why he wasn’t paid into it because he wasn’t training down great, so they didn’t make the first payment. He’s an obscure-bred horse being an E Dees Cam even though he was a nice brother in Big Bay Point. It might make him that much stronger down the road and as a three-year-old.”
Trainer Carl Jamieson co-owns Warrawee Needy with Tom Kyron, Dr. Michael Wilson and Floyd Marshall. The colt, who was a $20,000 purchase from last year’s Canadian Yearling Sale, has banked $93,500 to date.
