Ontario Sires Stakes Super Final champion Mister Herbie continued his late season win streak for trainer Jeff Gillis amongst Preferred company at Woobine Racetrack on Boxing Day Monday.
Fresh off a four-week layoff, the popular gelding was driven to victory in the $38,000 Preferred Trot by Jody Jamieson.
Andover America (Ben Baillargeon) fired to the lead from the outside seven post and put up a :27.3 opening quarter. After the parked out Ericskarri (Keith Oliver) cleared to command, Andover America moved back out for the retake.
Andover America reached the half in :58.1 while Star Ruffnready (Mike Saftic) moved underway from fourth with Mister Herbie advancing from the backfield and Take My Picture (Randy Waples) gapping his cover.
Star Ruffnready quickly took over command with Mister Herbie moving up into second. The top two battled head-to-head past three-quarters in 1:25.4 while the rest of the field lagged over three lengths behind.
Mister Herbie eventually wore down Star Ruffnready in the stretch and scooted away to score the one and a quarter length victory in 1:54 flat. Andover America came back on for second over Star Ruffnready.
Mister Herbie’s six race win streak includes his Super Final win and three Preferred events. The son of Here Comes Herbie out of Independent Lassie was purchased prior to his streak in early October by trainer Jeff Gillis, Gerald Stay, and Mac Nichol. Lightly raced as a freshman, Mister Herbie has now won 10 of his 24 races while banking $329,403.
Mister Herbie paid $3.20 to win.
