Major Herbie delivered an impressive five and one-quarter length victory in a sharp 1:59.4, establishing a new track record for sophomore trotting colts in his $24,000 Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots division Saturday night at Sudbury Downs.
With trainer-driver Wayne Henry in the race bike, Major Herbie watched from the pocket as Winbak Hall reeled off fractions of :29.1, :59.4 and 1:30.1, then stepped to the outside and sprinted away to the victory. Mandinga also got past Winbak Hall in the stretch, leaving the pacesetter to settle for third.
Henry shares ownership of Major Herbie with his partners in the Henry Stable of Arthur, Ont. and Daniel McCann of Parkhill, Ont. In 11 starts this season the Here Comes Herbie son has tallied six wins, one second and two thirds for earnings of $57,894. The young trotter has posted three wins and one third in Grassroots action and sits third in the standings with 162 points.
